The Film Base Forum, themed “Standards Building and Industry Empowerment”, had three parts: a report release, Roundtable I and Roundtable II. It was hosted by the China Film Association and the Xiamen Municipal People’s Government, co-hosted by the China Film Directors’ Guild and the China Film Art Directors’ Society, and organized by the Film Art Center of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the Film and Television Base Committee of the China Film Association.
Zhang Pimin, chairman of the China Film Foundation, Yang Buting, former chairman of China Film Group Corporation, and other officials and guests attended the forum. It was moderated by Chen Wei, National Class One actress at the National Theatre of China, and Zhao Ningyu, vice president of the China Film Performance Art Society.
In his address, Yin Li, vice chairman of the China Film Association and president of its Film and Television Base Committee, said that with the 20th CPC National Congress just concluded, and as film is an important part of the strategy of building a leading country in culture, we need to consider how, after a period of rapid industrialization of film and in the face of a new economic situation and new business conditions, film and television bases can uphold fundamentals while innovating, stimulate vitality, upgrade the industry and share resources using internet technology. The aim is to build a stronger and more rigorous film industry system, provide better support for filmmakers to realize their artistic vision, and move China from a major film country to a leading film power.
In the report release session, Yan Xing, vice president of industry development at Huawei, deputy secretary-general of the UHD World Association and member of the Science and Technology Committee of the National Radio and Television Administration, released the 2022 Research Report on Technology Empowering the Development of the Film Industry.
The theme of Roundtable I was “High Quality and High Standards: Innovating Base Operations”. Focusing on standards building and looking ahead to “digital assets”, the guests discussed the state of film bases during the pandemic and looked ahead to their independent innovation, efficiency gains and development strategies under the overall goal of building a leading film power.
The theme of Roundtable II was “Stimulating Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Empowering Quality Works”. The guests discussed in depth how film and television bases can help artists create better works, and how artists can keep raising new requirements that push bases to improve their facilities and the quality of their services.
Participants put forward two new concepts for creation and production: first, upgrading film art direction to “broad art direction”; and second, film as an asymptote of human imagination. These will serve as the theoretical basis for the next stage of work at China’s film bases.
