Home Hotline

Finalist
Director: Liu Kada

Synopsis

Using the closed space of working from home as its narrative container, the director lets an unexpected call break the daily rhythm of Zhang Yun, a hotline operator. Line static and an unclear dialect create suspense through sound, making "searching" the core action: others search for their way home, Zhang Yun searches for clues, and in fact it is a process of strangers in a modern city pulling one another out of loneliness. The work finds "great warmth in a small story". Zhang Yun's home becomes a window onto society, and the call that comes through the screen sets urban distance and connection trembling within a small space. Audiences praised it for "stringing together life's joys and sorrows with the sound of static"; the dialect in the static and the shadow of kapok blossoms on the balcony are gentle forces that pierce the barriers between people. Critics said it captures the emotional creases of the digital age: when Zhang Yun finally rescues the caller, the ringtone becomes the gentlest code of communication. Through the small light of an ordinary job, it reveals the warmth of everyday life in the city and lets everyone who has sought connection in loneliness see themselves.
