The Family Heirloom
The Family Heirloom
Synopsis
As usual, little Jiajia rummages through her grandfather's money box and takes a few coins as a reward for finishing her homework. In the drawer she unexpectedly finds a shadow puppet. It is colorful and looks very old, so she thinks it must be the family heirloom. She asks her grandfather whether it is, and he says no. She asks Chubby, who has no idea what it is either. But the steamed bun in Chubby's hand gives her an idea: maybe it is a mold for making buns. So the two of them use the puppet to make a pot of buns shaped like it, and Chubby gets a beating from his mother. Jiajia then asks the class monitor, who is practicing calligraphy. He tells her it is a model for copying and draws a picture of the puppet on the spot, but it doesn't look right to her. When she goes home for lunch, her grandfather tells her it is a shadow puppet, but he doesn't know how to explain what shadow puppetry is. In the afternoon, Jiajia and a few friends play house with the puppet. Their teacher sees them and recognizes what the puppet is for. The teacher tells her it is a priceless treasure. Overjoyed, Jiajia runs home to tell her grandfather the good news, only to find him performing a shadow play with fellow puppeteers.
