Synopsis

Wonton is the first short film in Hunan shot on a Huawei P40. Visually, the film conveys the distinctive charm of old Changsha. It tells the story of Li Jianmin, an old man living in the alleys of old Changsha, and his grandson Li Bufan, and revolves around the conflict between old and new ideas. Li Bufan lost his father as a child, and his grandfather Li Jianmin raised him on the income from his wonton shop, all the way to graduate school. While at school, Li uses his spare time to shoot online vlogs introducing Hunan and Changsha's local food and customs to netizens. When his grandfather finds out, he confiscates Li Bufan's phone on the grounds that he is neglecting his studies for idle pursuits. But in the face of deep family affection, the grandfather finally accepts Li Bufan's online public-interest livestreaming, and Li Bufan, with a bowl of wontons he makes himself, resolves the emotional conflict between grandfather and grandson and between old and new times.
