Leaving as We Came
Leaving as We Came
Synopsis
COVID-19 took away Zheng Jun's rice noodle shop, forcing it to close. He washes the dishes one last time, packs his bags and prepares to leave the city. Before leaving he takes a last look at the photo of him and her on the wall; only he remains in the torn photo. The metal door bangs. He opens it and finds Qin Yu, his childhood friend, now a food delivery rider, a job that brings Zheng Jun some comfort. Qin Yu says that because of COVID-19 the university's return to campus has been postponed, and so has Qiao Rui's; this may be the only good thing the pandemic has brought. So Qin Yu suggests making the most of it: before leaving, Zheng Jun should treat Qiao Rui to one last bowl of rice noodles and say what he has kept in his heart. Zheng Jun reluctantly agrees. Qin Yu racks his brains to "trick" Qiao Rui into coming to the shop, while Zheng Jun uses the only skill he has learned in twenty years: making a bowl of noodles, in the bowl that carries the mark of the two of them, of course. Qiao Rui finally sits across from Zheng Jun. It is a little awkward, and most awkward of all, she says she has already eaten, so she keeps her mask on the whole time. He wolfs down the bowl of noodles, so focused on eating that he does not see her off. He did not expect to wash one more bowl; as he thinks this, he feels something stuck to the bottom of the bowl. He peels it off: it is the other half of the photo. He runs after her, turns her around and kisses her through the blue non-woven mask. Back at the shop he sees that Qin Yu has washed the bowl. The two talk about where to go next and feel a little lost. Qin Yu says there is one thing he is sure of: he will no longer be a delivery rider, because this noodle shop has closed.
