Synopsis

Among the ancient Baima Tibetan people there is a legend that wearing masks and dancing drives away evil spirits and brings peace. The masks people wear are called caogai. One day a poacher on the run bursts into the home of an elderly Tibetan woman. Afraid she will recognize him, he panics and puts on one of the masks in her house. The two do not speak the same language, but the old woman is not afraid of him and offers him traditional honey zha liquor. Sitting face to face by the stove, the old woman starts to sing, and her singing slowly calms him. Behind the mask the man begins to hallucinate, as if undergoing a baptism. He wakes with a start, looks at the kind old woman, faces the fear in his heart and finds redemption.
