Jury Citation
The jury found that the sound team of The Wandering Earth, building on Chinese realist aesthetics and starting from the listening experience and expectations of domestic audiences, sought a subtle balance between the realism and immediacy of the dialogue and its emotional colouring. Sound and image across the film are highly coordinated and play an important role in driving the narrative rhythm.
The Wandering Earth: Synopsis
In the near future, scientists discover that the sun is rapidly ageing and expanding, and that the entire solar system, Earth included, will soon be engulfed. To save themselves, humans devise a bold plan called "The Wandering Earth": with the combined effort of the whole world, they build more than ten thousand engines and steering engines on Earth's surface to push the planet out of the solar system on a 2,500-year journey to a new home. When his son Liu Qi is four years old, Chinese astronaut Liu Peiqiang (Wu Jing) leaves for the international space station to take on the role of navigator with his international colleagues. Years later, the grown-up Liu Qi (Qu Chuxiao) sneaks up to the surface with his sister Duoduo (Zhao Jinmai) and secretly drives off in a transport truck belonging to their grandfather Han Zi'ang (Ng Man-tat). They are not only arrested but also caught up in a global engine shutdown. To repair the engines and stop Earth from falling into Jupiter, a worldwide all-out rescue begins, and Liu Qi's truck is requisitioned for it. In a race against time, countless people step forward one after another, regardless of their own safety, to keep alive the hope of survival for generations to come... The film is adapted from the novella of the same name by Liu Cixin.
