Synopsis
Some years after the An Lushan Rebellion, a large Tibetan army presses on the frontier and the war is in crisis. Gao Shi, military governor of Jiannan Xichuan, resists with all his strength, but his isolated forces cannot hold, and he falls back to defend Yunshan City. As night falls amid heavy snow, the court sends the eunuch Cheng to oversee the army. Learning that Cheng has come to question him about why he "harmed Li Bai", Gao Shi, in the dim candlelight, slowly tells the story of his friendship with Li Bai from their humble beginnings and of the glory of the literary world of the High Tang. Years earlier, Gao Shi, orphaned, had resolved to go to Chang'an to seek an official career, and on the way he met Li Bai, brilliant, optimistic and proud. Full of ambition, they found that talent and aspiration alone gave them no way to serve their country. After Chang'an, Li Bai went south to Yangzhou while Gao Shi went on waiting for a chance of advancement. Along the way, Du Fu, Wang Wei, Chang Jian, Li Guinian, Wu Daozi, Zhang Xu and other luminaries appear in turn, together composing the most splendid picture of the Tang at its height. The friendship between Gao Shi and Li Bai rises and falls against the tide of history...
