The Wandering Earth

Synopsis

In the near future, scientists discover that the Sun is rapidly aging and expanding, and that before long the entire solar system, Earth included, will be engulfed. To save itself, humanity launches a bold plan called "The Wandering Earth": pooling the world's resources to build ten thousand engines and steering engines on Earth's surface to propel the planet out of the solar system on a 2,500-year journey to a new home. When his son Liu Qi is four, Chinese astronaut Liu Peiqiang (Wu Jing) leaves for the international space station, taking on the duty of navigator with his international colleagues. Years pass and Liu Qi (Qu Chuxiao) grows up. He sneaks to the surface with his sister Duoduo (Zhao Jinmai) and secretly drives off in a transport truck belonging to his grandfather Han Zi'ang (Ng Man-tat). Not only are they arrested, but they are also caught up in a global engine shutdown. To repair the engines and stop Earth from falling into Jupiter, a worldwide all-out rescue begins, and even Liu Qi's truck is requisitioned. In a race against time, countless people step forward one after another without regard for their own safety, all to preserve hope for the survival of generations to come... The film is adapted from Liu Cixin's novella of the same name.
