Living the Land
Creative Statement
For thousands of years, the Chinese people have been inseparable from the land. People drew their basic means of living from it, and on this basis built a system of ethics and values. This film tells some warm stories of one family at that time. Through these stories I hope to explore the relationship between the Chinese people and the land, the traditional clan and family relationships that have lasted for thousands of years in China, the emotional and ethical relationships of the Chinese people, and the rural ecosystem of an agricultural civilisation.
Synopsis
Because of his parents' work, 10-year-old Xu Chuang has been living with his grandmother in the countryside. In 1991 he witnesses births, ageing, illness and death, weddings and funerals in the family. As the years quietly pass, he feels the restrained yet intense emotions among his relatives, while the village that year is also quietly changing.
