Suisui Ping'an

Synopsis

A rainstorm is coming. Thunder mixed with the shouts of the crowd crashes onto the sports ground, and Tang Ping'an, running in a primary school track meet, falls hard. When his mother, Li Mei, reaches the hospital, the doctor suggests she have another child as a bone marrow donor. Li Mei stands stunned in the endless corridor, as if this were the punishment for everything she did over the past decade or more. This is where the story begins. More than ten years earlier, in order to have a second child under the family planning policy, Li Mei had to send her baby daughter, Suisui, far away to relatives in another town. A few years later, as Suisui grew up, her lecherous foster father began secretly watching her while she bathed. Seemingly unwanted, Suisui ran away after a quarrel. Living on her own, she met a new "father", Liu Jiankai, a man who lives on a boat and makes a living by fishing. They called each other father and daughter, and life seemed to be getting better. Years later, a strange woman suddenly enters Suisui's life, claiming to be her aunt. In fact, after Li Mei's son Ping'an developed leukaemia, the family remembered the daughter they had abandoned and, through a thin thread from the past, tracked her down: she is the family's only hope. But Suisui seems to have known the truth all along. They act as friends, test each other and use each other. In the end they must all go home, but where is Suisui's home?
