Dear Meiying

Creative Statement

This is a story about love: not only the love between grandparent and grandchild, of raising a child and caring for a parent in return, but the unconditional support, tenderness and protection one person gives another. It is one of the most moving and warm things in human nature. Just as an ordinary cabbage can have the beauty of a rose, it is what we most want to hold on to in an uncertain and cold world.

Synopsis

A courier delivers a bouquet of roses with a declaration of love. The recipient is not 18-year-old Xiaobai but 78-year-old Meiying, who is secretly having a romance. Xiaobai, meanwhile, has failed the college entrance exam and is at a low point: her parents have divorced and refuse to take care of her, and the jobs she was counting on fall through one after another. Grandmother and granddaughter share a room, bickering and quarrelling yet loving and depending on each other. When Meiying's romance runs into trouble and she faces moral and social pressure, Xiaobai is offered a challenge and must choose between her future and her grandmother, who is about to be sent to a nursing home. After joys and sorrows, partings and reunions, even a plate of cabbage roots can become a rose. The rose stands for true love: caring for each other through hardship and never letting go.
