The Comet Boy

Creative Statement

When we grow old, what flashes of our lives will the AI android that comes to give us end-of-life care see in our fading minds?

Synopsis

The future, in a hot, forested mountain region. Hidden among the trees stands a huge building like a white ark, long steeped in the green of moss and stained by rain. Qizai is the nickname of a 12-year-old boy. His real name is D07, and he is in fact an AI android who has worked here for 80 years. In theory he understands "people" better than anyone. His job is to provide end-of-life care to lonely old people who have no children or relatives. By identifying the last images an old person holds onto in their mind, he offers a little comfort: humming a nursery rhyme, playing a tune on the harmonica, calling them by their childhood name... He has a human friend, Lan Yue, a 17-year-old girl who delivers fish to the care home with her father. Together they watch Halley's Comet, which appears once every 76 years, and talk about the "snow" on the comet. His product manager, Qingyuan, is a man who has just lost his son and is facing divorce, a man indifferent not only to AI but to the whole world. One day, something goes wrong while Qizai is caring for elderly resident No. 9076, and the old man dies in sorrow. Because Qizai has never made a mistake in more than 80 years, the company wants to find out why. So Qizai, more than 80 years old, and Qingyuan, a mismatched "father and son", set out together to trace the old man's life, glimpsing not only the man himself but also the footprints of the era from 1990 to 2020...
