A policeman and a criminal set out together on a dangerous journey to rescue pilgrims trapped on a sacred mountain.
When I was an intern at a police station, something my police mentor said stayed with me: "Police never know what is behind a door, but if the job requires it, they will open it." That door sums up police work. Police can never predict what danger they will face, but they must step forward. So I use the story of Into the Mountains to explore what belief drives police officers to push open door after door.
The story takes place in a bitterly cold Tibetan area. A group of pilgrims circling a sacred mountain are trapped on the snowy peaks, and the Yunli police station urgently organises a rescue. Because the roads are blocked, the police have no choice but to bring in Liqing, a poacher in custody, as their guide. Liqing knows every open and hidden path in the mountains, but he is also known for his cunning, and using him as a guide is a huge gamble. The situation is urgent, however, and there is no time for much thought. The difficulties of the journey into the mountains go far beyond what anyone imagined, and Liqing uses his knowledge of the snowy mountains to keep attacking the police and look for a chance to escape. The police suffer heavy losses, and the pilgrims waiting for rescue do not survive the cold night. In desperate straits, Guannan, a surviving policeman, stakes everything on catching up with Liqing, only to find that Liqing has given up his escape to help a little girl about the same age as his own daughter. In the bitter wind and snow, this sole surviving pilgrim links the criminal's conscience with the policeman's original commitment, and together they will face the trials of the snowy mountain...
