I Looked Up and Saw Two Identical Clouds

Creative Statement

For me, science fiction is a starting point that can carry all kinds of stories. I wrote this screenplay inspired by the pandemic, when I was struck by the way everyone was "lonely together": all alone at home, yet separated only by a wall. I believe good science fiction uses its premise as a metaphor. Ah Chi believes he is "the only real person in the world", much like the loneliness we feel growing up, as if no one in the world understands us and we are outsiders. In 2019 I directed a sci-fi romance short called A.N.N.I. To my surprise, this sample film, shot in just 20 hours on a very low budget, was selected for several international sci-fi film festivals. This film's story has nothing to do with A.N.N.I., but the two share a similar sci-fi world: science fiction that is not cold but textured and warm, an ideal backdrop for a youth love story. So the trailer for A.N.N.I. can also be seen as a sample for this film.

Synopsis

Ah Chi believes he lives in a "virtual reality". He is convinced that every digital world has patterns, and that once he finds them he will find a way out. Every day, in search of these patterns, he collects all kinds of objects and records trivial details and patterns: what passers-by wear, the models of cars, and so on. He believes he may be the only "real person" in this world and feels utterly alone. One day he meets Siu Pat. After spending some time with her, he becomes convinced that she is another "real person". Before long, the two become a couple. Ah Chi is set on leaving this virtual world, but Siu Pat doubts his ideas: Is this world really fake? Even if it is, as long as they are happy together, why must they leave? Can their relationship persuade Ah Chi to stay? Or will Siu Pat be willing to leave with him? And if they leave, what will the world outside be like? Facing all these unknowns, the only thing Ah Chi knows is... "Wherever you are, I will find you."
