Village Music

Creative Statement

The Taklamakan is the only place where the four great ancient civilizations and the world's three major musical systems meet. Here people regard music as "the salt of language". For thousands of years, as they have sung to the eternal desert, sun and rivers, the music that reaches between heaven and earth through fire and light has carried a power that inspires solemnity. Village Music returns to the place where we first set out; it is itself a simple narrative dastan (epic).

Synopsis

Kekequele village is holding a grand meshrep performance, and people are celebrating. At that moment a master musician passes away, and a chant rises through the village: "When a scholar dies, a village dies." At the same time, at the performance, a boy is born. To honor the late master, the villagers decide to name him "Art" (Senet). The boy grows up amid the Twelve Muqam: "My satar is strung with the bonds of life; it can console misfortune and give it pathos and sorrow." Like his name, "Art" (Senet), he too will become part of the "music" that is bound up with the lives of the people of this village.
