To prepare for an inspection by county leaders, Old Sha, head of a village opera troupe, stages a Shakespeare play. He finds that the plot of Macbeth, "killing the king to seize power", is mysteriously linked to "the current village Party secretary and the death of the former one". He sets out to get to the bottom of it, and an intricate, tragicomic village mystery unfolds.
