The Game Era

Creative Statement

Time moves forward and memory moves back. The story is based on my own childhood. It takes as its starting point the FC (Famicom) games that were the defining entertainment of the early 1990s: good and evil face off through games, and the characters become game characters and battle each other. It is fun and fresh to watch, combines nostalgia with popular appeal, and has a story full of twists and laughs and a bright, positive ending. While audiences are moved emotionally, the visuals also offer something new. It aims to bring back memories of an innocent age, to evoke shared memories and feelings through the bonds between father and son, lovers and friends, and, while entertaining the public, to carry universal values with childlike humour.

Synopsis

In 1990, ten-year-old Feifei dreams of owning a Subor game console. Money is tight, so his father cannot grant his wish and sets him a hard condition: he will get the console if he scores 90 or above in every subject. Feifei was born unable to sing in tune, and music and PE become obstacles he can hardly overcome. Through hard and hilarious efforts he reaches the target, but his father breaks his promise. His father works at the tax bureau. Corrupt officials, trying to win him over, send him a game console; Feifei accepts it without telling anyone, his father is framed for embezzlement, and the shock leaves him mentally ill. Feifei realises that the console is not what matters: a healthy father is. He discovers by chance that playing games makes his father happy and helps treat his illness. Trained by Feifei, his father becomes a gaming expert, finds clues to the embezzlement through games and defeats the forces of evil. In the end he becomes the king of games, and an anti-corruption hero too.
