In the 1980s and 1990s, a number of criminal organisations emerged in society. Wei Zhenhai and his gang, the "Spark Alliance", were one of them. Seen today, the story of Wei Zhenhai and the Spark Alliance is full of irony and black humour. Through topics tied to two eras, the story shows two states of society and tells the story of one group of people through the youth of two generations. Using the shell of a gangster film, it satirises and mocks gang culture. It aims to tell audiences that all feelings must run on the right track.
Wang Dawei is a construction businessman with good prospects and a single father. Busy with work, he has grown distant from his son, who is in high school. At a parents' meeting, he learns to his surprise that his son has joined a gang called the "Spark Alliance". Looking into it, he discovers that he founded the gang himself when he was young: a joke from long ago has grown into a real organisation, and he is its "godfather". To keep the government construction contract he is working on, he must disband the Spark Alliance at once. Wang Dawei gets in touch with Cai Hu and Su Jingchun, childhood friends he has not seen for years, who also founded the Spark Alliance. Cai Hu now heads the office for combating organised crime, and Su Jingchun is a university professor, and both are horrified by their "gangster" past. The three revive the friendship that had been "disbanded", recall what they did in their youth, and set out on a road of redemption to wipe out the gang.
