Deadly Trending

Creative Statement

Living in today's online society, I have seen many online incidents in which, swept along by online opinion, the so-called truth flips several times and the people involved are judged good or evil by turns with each new revelation. Most of this comes from netizens' kindness and sense of justice being exploited by people with ulterior motives. So I hope my story lets audiences take a god's-eye view of how an online incident ferments and how the people involved rise and fall. Using the shell of a mystery genre film, I want to prompt audiences to reflect on how to tell true from false in their online lives, avoid being used by online manipulators, and work together to clean up our online environment.

Synopsis

A recent case of danger in the mountain forests puts the survivor, Shen Ning, at the centre of public attention. With no other option, Shen Ning asks Sun Zhenyi, a journalist who has suffered the same kind of online abuse, to clear her name. Sun Zhenyi identifies with her story and decides to try. As Sun Zhenyi debunks several rumours, online opinion swings back and forth, and some even begin to sympathise with Shen Ning. But gradually, Shen Ning's motives make Sun Zhenyi suspicious. At the same time, the key evidence he finds suggests that Shen Ning seems to be using him and online opinion, and the case grows more complex. The truth goes far beyond what anyone imagined...
