Synopsis
In the early years of the Republic of China, in Wulong Town, where turtle shells circulate as currency, an idealistic young man back from studying abroad, a courtesan with ideals of her own, a corrupt official lining his own pockets, a rogue who never repays his debts, the bespectacled Tailor Wang, Little Head of the Jinxiang goldsmith's shop and a tofu pudding girl who rides an ostrich play out an absurd comedy of errors. It is a story of China's first generation of returnees from overseas, and a film that combines Eastern freehand aesthetics with the language of cinema.
