Portrait of a Certain Orient
Director: Marcelo Gomes Screenwriter: Marcelo Gomes, Maria Camargo, Gustavo Campos
Two Catholic siblings Emilie and Emir flee Lebanon's war to Brazil. During the journey, Emilie falls in love with a Muslim merchant, Omar. Emir, consumed by jealousy, will use their religious differences to split them apart. During an argument, Emir is injured and is taken by Omar into the Amazon jungle to seek a healer. After Emir recovers, Emilie makes a decision that will lead to tragic consequences. This film not only depicts the immigrant experience but also offers a profound exploration of memory, passion, and prejudice.
