Synopsis

Tibetan performance halls, originally called Langma halls, emerged in the late 1990s, offering drinks and performances of Langma and other folk arts. Tibetan singers with little formal education, usually from remote Tibetan areas, quickly reached the stage of their time on the strength of their singing and dancing. Times have changed: some of them hold on to the past, others head toward the future. In today's increasingly regulated live performance scene, their competitors include not only professionally trained singers, but also amateurs skilled at producing viral songs, and AI that writes new songs at an unimaginable speed. Made over four years across several cities and interwoven with real footage, the film has a group of Tibetan singers tell a story about Tibetan singers. It includes much previously unreleased archival footage of singers from remote Tibetan pastoral areas, and the onstage and backstage scenes in present-day performance halls were all filmed on mobile phones such as the Huawei Mate40.
