Synopsis

A girl who lost her hearing as a child begins, with the help of the whistling feedback of her hearing aid, to dimly hear the sounds of the world. Her family is eager for her to pronounce words correctly and speak, but things do not go as hoped. For years the hearing aids work poorly, and the cost of replacing and repairing them is often a burden on the family. As she grows up, she has to face bigger questions of love, marriage and her future, as well as the difficulty of finding work. With help from charitable members of the public, she gets the chance to receive a cochlear implant. The surgery succeeds, but after so many years of deafness and isolation, she does not know how to cope. She refuses to speak and tries to run away...
