Synopsis

Kong Zhenlan, a villager of Jiuji Village in Qixian County, Shanxi, is a small, hunchbacked woman in her seventies. Since 1982, over more than 40 years, she has taken in nearly 50 abandoned children with disabilities. Over the years, Kong Zhenlan and her husband saved money by carrying cement and steel bars on construction sites, mending clothes and fixing zippers for others, and borrowed money to pay for operations for one disabled child after another, send them to school and raise them. Some of these children are now doctors, teachers and athletes. As a mother, she has hardly ever worn a decent piece of clothing or eaten a proper meal; out of her reverence for life, she has raised a whole family of sons and daughters.
