Synopsis

In this film the protagonist, the elderly Pan Xiaogui, goes out five times and lies down twice. The first time he goes out, to his elder daughter's home, she mocks him as foolish and says he deserves to be followed by a camera. The second time he works in the fields and plays with children. The third time he attends a Dujie ceremony and is told by villagers to behave and not act crazy. The fourth time he happens upon a neighbor slaughtering a pig and is told to eat but not drink. The fifth time he tidies up at his younger son's home and passers-by jokingly call him a handsome old man. The first time he lies down, smoking, his wife teases him for not being serious; the second time, at his elder son's home, they welcome the New Year and all becomes calm. Even though old Pan's mind is confused, traditional ways of production and life have left a deep mark on him, and the trend of modern influence on the village also appears in his wandering mind: buildings replace thatched houses, new tools replace old ones, cement roads replace dirt roads... Old and new coexist in Pan Xiaogui's first-person view. Others are busy, and he is busy too; others laugh at him for being foolish, and he laughs.
