Synopsis

Old Bai Mancang wakes with a start in the morning. He calls his son to remind him that today is the Qingming Festival and that he should come back to sweep his mother's grave. He then hurries to the market. Since his son, daughter and grandson are all coming back, he buys some groceries, but just after he buys the meat, the daughter calls to say she has an appointment with a lawyer about her divorce and cannot come. He takes the groceries home, packs the offerings and goes to his late wife's grave to wait for his son and grandson. He waits and waits, but they do not appear. Grave sweeping must be done before noon, so he sweeps his wife's grave alone. On the way back he meets his son and grandson, but it is already past noon, so they can only go home. Because his grandson wants French fries, he hurries out again to buy potatoes. Just as the fries are almost done, his daughter-in-law calls and asks the son and grandson to come back. Because of work and job matters, they have to leave, and the old man is left alone with the burnt fries.
