Synopsis

After Taiwan is ceded under the Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895, Japan takes the island by force, and one area after another falls. The mountain regions, cut off by a lack of roads, are not yet affected. Among the Seediq of the Wushe area, Mouna Rudo, a young man of Mahebo village, stands out for his courage and leads his people in constant fighting with the Kantowan people. Coveting the rich resources of Wushe, the Japanese try to take the area but meet fierce Seediq resistance and suffer heavy losses. In the end, they enter Wushe by exploiting the feuds between the tribes. Mouna Rudo is forced to submit, but the fire in his heart never goes out.
