Synopsis
Chengdu, the Double Ninth Festival. Xia Chan dreams of leaping from the top of a tall building. In the noisy city, in a crude illegally built shack, she seems able to hear only her own heartbeat and that of the life inside her. One summer several years later, a transformed Xia Chan is drinking and socializing as usual when Xia Xiaomang, a 12-year-old girl carrying her photo, arrives from far away. Xia Chan's shifting attitude leaves Xiaomang at a loss, until she meets Jiang Ai, a girl who has just come of age and who shows her another side of the city. In the summer heat, things grow intense, and the appearance of Kang Guizhen signals that the summer is coming to an end.
Jury Citation
The jury awards Best Small and Medium-Budget Feature Film to Mother's Child for its quiet, restrained Eastern narrative aesthetic, which, through a fine balance of artistic texture, emotional intensity and humanist depth, offers a moving portrait of Chinese family love. Spanning a long stretch of time while remaining concise, the film uses a spare, sketch-like narrative style, steady and restrained camerawork, and understated yet intense performances to raise everyday moments into poetry, delicately weaving together the fates of three generations of women.
