Synopsis

In the summer of 2003, in a southern city, construction of the landmark Gemini Tower is in full swing. Soaring into the clouds, imposing and mysterious, it stands for a city and an era that never stop moving forward. But a single father living on Xiaohe Street, across from the Gemini Tower, has only a short time left to live. Old Jin is raising his daughter, Jin Jin, on his own. They are not well off, but their life is simple and happy. A "master problem-solver" full of strange ideas, he always finds a loving way to deal with difficulties. Then a sudden diagnosis of late-stage cancer deals a heavy blow to their quiet life. Old Jin does not stay down for long. To keep his six-year-old daughter from being hurt, in the last month of his life he teams up with his three best friends and, with help from the Gemini Tower's developer, Lu Yihan, builds a fantastic lie for his daughter: her dad is an alien who must take the Shenzhou-5 spacecraft back to Venus. Old Jin grows and changes, from a clever dad who uses a deposit contract to trick his way into getting his daughter a school place, to a romantic dad who lights up the sky for her with the Gemini Tower's searchlights, to a great dad who plays an alien in order to say goodbye. In her last days with her father, Jin Jin also grows up quickly, overcomes her fear of separation and finds strength. At the crucial moment when her father fails to make the launch of Shenzhou-5, Jin Jin discovers that the mysterious cloud above the Gemini Tower has been following them all along, and that it hides an important secret about the aliens' landing craft......
