Logline
A policeman and a fugitive are forced to spend two days and two nights alone at a deserted checkpoint on the plateau. They change each other's fate and begin a new chapter in their lives.
What is the goodness in human nature? When the protagonist Jiang Chongwu, unable to bear the weight of life, goes astray and commits an impulsive crime, if you were a policeman, would your task be only to bring him to justice, or also to change his heart? What is great love among people? Jiang Chongwu believes the whole world has abandoned him, yet at a border checkpoint he receives warmth and wisdom from the policeman Gao Mada. A stranger he meets by chance helps him find hope in life again.
Jiang Chongwu, who has killed a man on impulse out of rage over the man taking his wife, drives off hoping to escape across the border, but is stopped by Gao Mada, the policeman guarding a checkpoint. Gao Mada welcomes him warmly, slaughtering a sheep and laying out drinks. Jiang Chongwu learns that Gao Mada has held his post here for three months and does not know about the killing in the county town. The next day, Jiang Chongwu tries to drive away but finds a flat tyre. Abandoning the car, he runs off but breaks through the ice, and in the crisis Gao Mada pulls him out. But Gao Mada cleaning his handgun and sorting his handcuffs makes Jiang Chongwu nervous again. He seizes a chance to steal the policeman's gun, but cannot bring himself to pull the trigger. That evening, Gao Mada stews fish and lays out drinks, as warm as ever. Jiang Chongwu happens to find an air pump; Gao Mada, seeing this, gives an evasive answer and can only let him do as he pleases. Having inflated the tyre, Jiang Chongwu drives off to look for a phone signal. Back at the checkpoint, he finds that Gao Mada has slipped off a cliff and is hanging on for his life. Jiang Chongwu is about to leave, but Gao Mada's cries for help do not stop, and in the end he pulls him up. The following day, Jiang Chongwu leaves the checkpoint, but when he stops for fuel he finds his money gone and has to return. He finds Gao Mada on the mountain digging for jade, but a blast accidentally sets off an avalanche. Working together, Gao Mada and Jiang Chongwu are both rescued, and the two open their hearts to each other. The exhausted Jiang Chongwu is woken by a knock at the door: the relief officers have arrived at the ghost checkpoint. In a panic, Jiang Chongwu finds a handgun clipped to the trousers Gao Mada has taken off, and picks it up to face the police. Gao Mada tells Jiang Chongwu that the man who took his wife, whom he stabbed, is not dead, and that the gun in his hand is broken. Jiang Chongwu fires two shots into the air, and the gun does not go off. In tears, he raises his hands and surrenders.
