Creative Statement
Finding Her is a story about the hardships of rural women and their gradual awakening to self-awareness. A newborn baby mysteriously disappears in a magical downpour, and this inciting incident gives the story enough suspense and momentum. The story uses a genre structure to build a smooth narrative, and uses images with an Eastern sensibility to create the particular atmosphere of the place and the era. The crisis and the stakes rise step by step, and the mystery unfolds layer by layer as the protagonist goes deeper. At the moment when the character takes her stand as an individual against the group, the truth sinks into an even greater, unknowable fog.
Synopsis
Guangdong Province, 1995. Chen Fengdi, a sugarcane farmer, and Lin Shen, the wife of a sugar mill owner, both about to give birth, are hiding in a thatched hut beside the Sidatang pond. At noon, each gives birth to a baby girl, but a storm blows the hut apart into the pond. Risking her life, Chen Fengdi pulls out only one of the babies. Because the baby has no porcelain bracelet on her wrist, she judges it to be Lin Shen's child, and her own daughter's fate is unknown. As she searches for her daughter, events take strange and shifting turns, and the search by Chen Fengdi and her husband Gan Yaozu moves between the pond, a wild man in the great banana grove, and Lin Shen and her husband. As the confrontation escalates and the clues deepen, Chen Fengdi draws closer to the truth: because the baby was a girl, her child may indeed have been abandoned in the pond. To bring the child back to light, she has to face enormous pressure from tradition and morality and dig up the Sidatang pond. But the magical sight beneath the pond plunges the truth back into fog.
