Creative Statement

The film tells the story of Bilig's family and a mad horse with a mental illness. It also shows how different species, unable to communicate through language, understand each other and live together. We aim for a warm and kind expression, and hope to show the beautiful relationship of lives understanding one another, and moments in which people and nature help each other fulfil themselves.

Synopsis

The old horse Unenchi has caused trouble many times and has viciously injured Bilig's son, who is now in hospital. The elders of the grassland decide to put down the mad horse, which suffers from a mental illness. Bilig cannot bear it and secretly lets the horse go. A series of incidents in which the mad horse enters the city and injures people forces him to bring it back. After much effort, Bilig finds the horse and finally understands: more than a year earlier, Unenchi's newborn foal was stolen, and in its anger, to draw attention, the horse began attacking people. Finding the foal is not easy. With the help of Nahai, his former rival in love, Bilig gets back the foal, which was about to be sold for a high price and trained as a racehorse. But the mad horse has already been taken by officers from the police station and is to be euthanised. Bilig begs them to spare its life. The officers have no choice but to follow the law. Out of humanity, the officers arrange for Unenchi to see the foal, a deeply moving scene. Through the officers' mediation, the injured people each sign letters of forgiveness. Back on the grassland, Unenchi and the foal return to normal life. One night, they disappear again. The elders believe the old horse sensed it was about to die and did not want to die in front of its master, so it left without saying goodbye. Bilig searches again without success. When Bilig's son leaves hospital, the streets are filled with wild horses, and at their head is the foal. Carrying father and son, the foal leads more than a thousand wild horses out of the city towards the grassland. Among the galloping herd, Bilig never again finds Unenchi...
