Former head of the Department of Filmmaking at Taipei National University of the Arts. She founded the Taipei Film Festival and promoted film subsidies and film ratings. She has worked across industry, academia and criticism. She has presented and produced a number of classic films that were well received by critics and at the box office, and that won awards internationally. She has played an important role in bringing Chinese-language cinema to international audiences, helping directors including Edward Yang, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Wang Xiaoshuai and Tsai Ming-liang reach the international stage. She has also written extensively to build an aesthetic theory of Chinese-language cinema, worked to promote Chinese-language film culture and transnational co-production, and trained many film directors, producers and actors now active in the industry.
