Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom
Director: Pawo Choyning Dorji Screenwriter: Pawo Choyning Dorji
Ugyen is a young teacher in Bhutan, but he does not want to teach; he dreams of going to Australia to become a singer. To placate him, the Ministry of Education posts him to the "highest school in the world", Lunana Primary School, at an altitude of 5,000 meters, where the scenery is beautiful and classes run for only a few months a year... After an eight-day trek, Ugyen finally reaches the school and finds himself exiled far from every comfort he knows. There is no electricity and no pop music, and the classroom does not even have a blackboard... The villagers welcome him warmly, but for the first time in his life he feels powerless, close to tears... With no way back, Ugyen has to start teaching at the "highest school". As the children's voices reading aloud echo across the snow mountains again, he finds value and joy in teaching through their eagerness to learn. Winter is coming, blizzards are on the way, and the school is about to close. Ugyen, who has fallen in love with Lunana, must decide whether to stay before snow closes the road...
