Synopsis
Truck driver Gou Ren (Hui Wangjun) loses his only son to illness. Convinced that his best friend caused his son's death, he sets out in grief and anger to take revenge, but on the way he runs into Maodou (Bai Zeze), an unruly child. Having no family left nearby, Maodou is set on finding his father, who works away from home, and throws a tantrum that wreaks havoc on the truck. To get compensation for the damaged goods, Gou Ren has no choice but to take Maodou along, and the two begin a tragicomic journey in search of family. The unruly child keeps causing trouble, and the grown-up stirs up plenty of his own along the way. Over an especially cold winter, the man and the boy laugh together and share hardship, and two lonely souls gradually draw closer.
Jury Citation
The Rattle Drum tells a story of mutual redemption in which a man and a boy who become father and son partway through life keep each other company and console each other. With a raw, realistic texture it looks at left-behind children and migrant workers in the course of urbanization and upholds the spirit of realism. Its plain, calm and restrained storytelling carries strong emotional tension, giving its artistic expression a direct emotional impact.
