The Woman Mountain Porter

Synopsis

The Shanghai opera The Woman Mountain Porter is based on a true story. It tells of Wang Meiying, a single mother who works as a mountain porter to raise her blind, disabled son and a pair of boy-girl twins. The character is based on Wang Meihong, an ordinary rural woman at the foot of Qiyun Mountain in Xiuning County, Anhui Province. Seventeen years ago, her husband died in an accident, leaving the family in desperate straits. To raise her three young children, she resolutely took up work as a mountain porter, a job even men shrank from, carrying the burden of supporting her family on her slender shoulders and raising all three children to adulthood.

Jury Citation

The jury considered that, through vivid characters, warm family affection and deeply moving details, The Woman Mountain Porter interprets the simple truth that "a good life is achieved through hard work". The filming approach is concise, and the expressive and realistic elements of opera film are well combined. Having the real people appear on screen alongside the actors who play them is a valuable exploration in depicting the present and recreating reality.
