To ease his longing, Lidong and his brother Lichun (Xin Baiqing) travel to Yanagawa, the town that shares Chuan's name, hoping to see her once more. As they meet again, the truth behind many past events comes to light, and Lidong learns why Chuan left all those years ago. Yet his long-hidden love for her only grows stronger in this heartfelt confession made far away in "her" land...
Jury Citation
With a distinctive art-house texture and an Eastern aesthetic woven into its narrative, Yanagawa portrays the lives and circumstances of characters who live in different places, speak different languages and hold different identities. It depicts the complex love and homesickness of individuals through small details, and writes of cultural reconciliation and rupture in a state of flux. The images are beautiful and pure, blending the real and the imagined; the pace is calm and unhurried, and the mood restrained and lingering, reflecting the filmmaker's serious artistic pursuit. Winner of Best Low-to-Medium Budget Feature Film.
